Stanley Cup Final 2026

June 2โ€“17, 2026 ยท United States & Canada

๐Ÿ”ด Live now

๐Ÿ“– Origin & History

Lord Stanley of Preston, the sixth Governor General of Canada, purchased a decorative bowl in 1892 for ten pounds sterling and donated it as a challenge cup for the dominion's best hockey club. It was first awarded in 1893 to the Montreal Hockey Club โ€” making it the oldest professional sports trophy in North America still competed for today.

For its first three decades, the Cup was contested by amateur and semi-professional teams across Canadian cities. The National Hockey League was founded in 1917, and from 1926 onward the Stanley Cup became exclusively the NHL championship trophy. The game expanded from small Canadian rinks to 32 teams across the United States and Canada.

The sport's history is punctuated by dynasties: the Montreal Canadiens' record 24 titles, the Orr-era Bruins, Gretzky's Edmonton Oilers dynasty (1984โ€“88), and the modern era where the Florida Panthers won back-to-back titles in 2024 and the Vegas Golden Knights became only the second expansion team since 1967 to win the Cup in their inaugural decade.
