Formula 1 2026 Season
March – December 2026 · Worldwide
📖 Origin & History
The Formula One World Championship was inaugurated on 13 May 1950 at Silverstone, England, sanctioned by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile). Giuseppe Farina won both that opening race and the first Drivers' Championship, driving for Alfa Romeo. The original season included just seven rounds — including the Indianapolis 500.
The early decades were shaped by Italian and then British constructors. Cooper's rear-engine revolution in 1958 changed car design permanently; Colin Chapman's Lotus introduced ground-effect aerodynamics in 1977, transforming cornering speeds. The 1980s brought turbo engines and the unforgettable Senna–Prost rivalry at McLaren, producing the most dramatic moments in the sport's history.
The safety revolution pioneered by Jackie Stewart in the 1970s — after too many drivers had died — continued through the Hans Bellof, Roland Ratzenberger, and Ayrton Senna tragedies of the 1990s, eventually making F1 the safest it has ever been. In 2026, the biggest regulation change in a generation introduces active aerodynamics, near-50/50 hybrid power units running on 100% sustainable fuel, and two new manufacturers — Audi and Cadillac — bringing the grid to 11 teams.
